How Secure Is Your Password?

So you think you know how to devise strong, damn near impenetrable passwords? Just how secure are your passwords? Do you really know your stuff when it comes to security? Great! Now answer the following question:

"Which of the following two passwords is stronger,
more secure, and more difficult to crack?
D0g.....................
                                                                     PrXyc.N(n4k77#L!eVdAfp9" source: GRC.com

You can thank Steve Gibson of the Gibson Research Corporation for that question. I don't want to spoil the answer for you so click here and find out the answer as well as the explanation of the answer, and security concepts such as password padding.

Tracking Movement Through The Wall....Wirelessly

Anyone who has played popular military based games like Call of Duty will be familiar with a small navigational map typically located on one of the corners of the games screen allowing the player to see not only where they are located on the game map, but also where the enemy is located. In certain games their location is revealed on the map even if they are inside a building.

Could you imagine if that technology really existed what that would mean for law enforcement agents and military personnel on the combat field? Not really to my surprise this technology does exist! It was developed and revealed in its infancy by Joey Wilson and Neal Patwari from the Uniservsity of Utah in 2009. The team were working on a wireless system capable of tracking movement even inside of a building out of plain sight of people on the outside of the building. Take a few minutes to watch the video as Joey explains and demonstrates  how the system works:

More Troubles For Yahoo

Just when you thought things couldn't get any worse for Yahoo, the once mighty giant at the top of search engine/instant messenger empire that Google brought crumbling down finds itself in the middle of a scandal. Scott Thompson stepped down as the company's CEO and has left the company as reported by ZDNet. What caused his departure you might wonder? Possibly a little white lie that came back to bite him. Read an except from ZDNet's report below:
"The former PayPal president was hired in January to fill the void left from the sudden departure of Carol Bartz, who was famously fired by phone. At least on the bright side Thompson wasn’t extended the same courtesy. Only a few months in to his new appointment, he promised a “smaller, nimbler, more profitable” company, while at the same time serving pink slips to 2,000 employees. Thompson justified the move by claiming the company would save around $375 million per year. Yahoo’s first quarter under his leadership scraped a low bar, generating $1.077 billion in revenue minus traffic acquisition costs, managing only a 1 percent increase on the first quarter of 2011.
During the earnings call, he said the company would scrap 50 ‘non-core’ products from Yahoo’s portfolio, leaving only Yahoo News, Finance, Sports, Entertainment — and crucially, Yahoo Mail — in the clear. But friction emerged between Loeb and Thompson soon after his hiring. Dan Loeb, founder of Third Point, which has a 5.8 percent stake in Yahoo, wanted more seats on Yahoo’s board. Yahoo refused, and Loeb fired back with allegations that Thompson had not been awarded a computer science degree at Stonehill College as was claimed on his Yahoo biography. The erroneous biography was made only more suspicious after it was ported from eBay pages while he was at the company.
Despite the matter only being a minor detail to his record, he had ample opportunity to correct the mistakes — even when interviewed in person — but failed to do so. Yahoo pulled the biography from its website within hours of Loeb’s allegations, but it didn’t escape SEC filings, in which the biography was ported to the filing without a moment’s thought. Yahoo effectively misled the U.S. government in an official report."

Tech Quote of the Day: 5/14/12

"Michael Jordan having "retired," with $40 million in endorsements, makes $178,100 a day, working or not.
If he sleeps 7 hours a night, he makes $52,000 every night while visions of sugarplums dance in his head.
If he goes to see a movie, it'll cost him $7.00, but he'll make $18,550 while he's there.
If he decides to have a 5-minute egg, he'll make $618 while boiling it.
He makes $7,415/hr more than minimum wage.
He'll make $3,710 while watching each episode of Friends.
If he wanted to save up for a new Acura NSX ($90,000) it would take him a whole 12 hours.
If someone were to hand him his salary and endorsement money, they would have to do it at the rate of $2.00 every second.
He'll probably pay around $200 for a nice round of golf, but will be reimbursed $33,390 for that round.
Assuming he puts the federal maximum of 15% of his income into a tax deferred account (401k), his contributions will hit the federal cap of $9500 at 8:30 a.m. on January 1st.
If you were given a penny for every 10 dollars he made, you'd be living comfortably at $65,000 a year.
He'll make about $19.60 while watching the 100 meter dash in the Olympics, and about $15,600 during the Boston Marathon.
While the common person is spending about $20 for a meal in his trendy Chicago restaurant, he'll pull in about $5600.
This year, he'll make more than twice as much as all U.S. past presidents for all of their terms combined. Amazing isn't it?
However...
If Jordan saves 100% of his income for the next 450 years, he'll still have less than Bill Gates has today.
$$$ Game over. Nerd wins." - Unknown

Google's Semi-Driverless Car Gets License

As the world takes multiple steps toward technological advances, it seems like Google is taking enormous steps towards becoming the real life Skynet (see Terminator movie). I'm joking (or am I?) but when you think of the many accomplishments Google has made in the past few years and exactly what those accomplishments were, you will quickly see a stunning resemblance to the evil computer network in the Terminator movies.

While there are no human looking cyborgs seeking to kill humans roaming the earth just yet, I can tell you that Google's driverless car has gotten its license yesterday in the state of Nevada. This is a huge step for Skynet Google. All jokes aside this is a big deal and while the car isn't completely driverless per-say it is definitely a step in the right direction toward producing cars that will eventually be truly driverless (needing no aid from humans). Vehicles that will get us safely from point A to point B while we sleep cozily through the night. Check out the video below to see how it works:

Volkswagen's Hover Car

When I was a kid everyone thought we'd be riding around in flying cars by the year 2000 (think "BladeRunner"). Here it is the year 2012 and still no flying cars in sight. We may see cars that will drive themselves in the near future, but while we wait for the epic day when cars share the skies with birds and planes, and what ever else may be up there, this video of a futuristic Volkswagen hovering car will have to suffice.

No Hoodies On Wall Street Mr. Zuckerberg

Today Facebook made it's intial public offering (IPO) and it's CEO Mark Zuckerberg showed up sporting a black hoodie which most likely caused an assortment of "ooohs and ahhhhs" and not in a good way. Him wearing a hoodie on Wall Street especially at an IPO was frowned upon by many speculating that him doing so is surely because he is lacking in the maturity department.

Would You Let A Robot Wash Your Hair?

We're getting closer to robots being integrated in our everyday lives and here is one more example. Panasonic is trying to perfect it's Head Care Robot so that it can be used by the public. Tech Eater reports that the robot will be used at a hair salon for a trial period of 2 months. If all goes well we may see this technology first being used in hospitals on disabled patients providing them with a way to wash their hair.
