Intel Takes On Cybercrime At The Processor Level

Security threats are a clear and present danger in today's highly technological society. No one is safe and everyone is a potential target for cybercriminals. Whether a government institution, SMB, corporation or private citizens, all are fair game in the world of cybercrime. The leaps and strides made in technology over the past few years, have given birth to new threats and more sophisticated attacks.

IT professionals have met the problem head on implementing a multi-layered approach to combating security threats using a combination of hardware and software to mitigate various types of attacks which has proven to be successful; but as my father always says, "bigger mousetrap, bigger mouse." That simply means for every security measure put into place, someone will always be seeking out 'bigger' ways to break those measures. So in essence, the bigger the mousetrap gets, the bigger they make the mouse to overcome it.

That simple saying states exactly what's been going on over the years. Security appliances, software, etc., have gotten more "intelligent" and sophisticated, but so have cybercriminals. In a corporate setting, a power user with antivirus software and a software based firewall on their system is a pretty safe system (generally speaking) because the local security on their system in conjunction with the company's network security adds multiple levels of security; however, Intel is pointing out that even that isn't enough. The video below explains how Intel is taking security one step further by digging a little deeper and starting at the processor level, check it out:

Foglight Network Management (NMS) Backup Exec Configuration and Monitoring

"Just because you’re a network administrator doesn’t make you an expert in switches and servers. Sure, you may be able to get by with help from guides on the Internet. But if you make just one tiny typo when adjusting settings – and you can’t access the Internet for help – you’ll need something else to save your bacon.

Luckily, your Foglight NMS software has you covered. In just a few minutes, Foglight NMS can roll back your settings and configurations to before you made your typo. No one even needs to know the network outage was your fault." source: Quest Software

Is Texting Killing Voicemail?

Technology can be a double edged sword at times. On one hand it brings about innovations that take us to new levels of efficiency in our work and play making our lives easier; but on the other hand there is a price to pay for innovation. That price is the death of older technology. The cassette tape killed the 8 track, recordable CDs killed the cassette and the list goes on. Vonage is adding voicemail to the long list of technology destined to kick the bucket soon:
"In data prepared for USA TODAY, Vonage, an Internet phone company, says the number of voice-mail messages left on user accounts was down 8% in July from a year ago. Checking one's voice mail seems to be considered an even a bigger chore than leaving a voice message. Retrieved voice mail fell 14% among Vonage users in the same period.

'They hate the whole voice-mail introduction, prompts, having to listen to them in chronological order,' says Michael Tempora, senior vice president of product management at Vonage. One response by the company to the trend is a new voice-mail transcription service that converts voice messages for delivery as e-mail or text.

The service also e-mails a direct link to the voice-mail audio file, letting users bypass several steps to listen to it. 'Voice transcription isn't perfect,' Tempora says. 'But they understand who called and what the message is about.'

The transcription tools make skimming through messages easier for on-the-go users such as Dmitri Leonov, an executive at SaneBox, a maker of e-mail inbox management software. 'E-mail (etiquette) says to respect your friends' time,' says Leonov, who rarely listens to messages. 'And I should stop leaving voice mail, as well. Practice what you preach.'" source: freep.com

Microsoft Sets Sights On Virtualization Market

VMware better be careful these days because Microsoft has made it clear that they are ready to dominate the virtualization battlefield. Although the company is not a current leader in the market the software giant is looking to change that fact with Windows Server 2012 very soon:

"Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) released a new version of Windows for running corporate networks, trying to take share from VMware Inc. (VMW) and gain ground as companies seek to cut the cost of managing business programs.

Windows Server 2012 improves features for virtualization, which allows companies to cut costs by using fewer server computers in their data centers. More businesses are relying on virtualization technology amid the shift to so-called cloud computing, where information is managed and stored remotely, rather than on local software and hardware.
The new program has already won over customers such as Equifax Inc. (EFX) and Bank of Montreal, which tried out early versions of the product, said Satya Nadella, president of Microsoft’s server and tools division, in an interview.
Microsoft, the world’s largest software maker, wants to boost sales of Windows Server by getting customers to set up so- called private clouds, which are accessed from within a corporate network, rather than the wider Internet. Forrester Research Inc. forecasts spending on private clouds will top $20 billion in sales next year, allowing companies to get the benefits of running applications on large pools of servers and storage machines while keeping programs secure on their own servers." source: bloomberg.com
