How A Typo Can Ruin Your Chances Of Getting A Job

This is a tale of an opportunity lost before it even began. Imagine being in college and landing a paid internship at a major network. Good stuff right? Now imagine before you even show up to work, you get a call that says you're not right for the position. How in the world can something like that happen you may be asking yourself? Well, the short answer is a junior in college went through this experience when he made a typo on a thank you message to his future supervisor.

The long answer; the lack of paying attention to detail, determined his fate. The thought behind this is if you don't proofread your message to your would be supervisor, then you certainly would be less likely to proofread communications to a client bringing into question professionalism. Take a peek at the message below:

I can't explain why the guy failed to capitalize 'Thursday' but that apparently was a deal breaker that cost him the job. If there is a lesson to be learned here, it's to pay attention to detail. Use the tools that are readily available for use (even on smartphones) and run a basic spell check. Today's job market is extremely competitive with highly skilled and talented professionals competing for the same job, don't allow basic errors to be the determining factor for why you didn't get the job.

Watch What You Say On Facebook, It Could Lead You To Jail...

Freedom of speech is a concept that sounds good but in reality it's not a freedom that we actually have. Don't agree? Think about this. If you don't like the current U.S. President, can you publicly say or write that you'd like to punch him in the nose without being investigated by the Secret Service shortly afterward? Absolutely not. How about in 1996 when Oprah discussed mad cow disease on her show and stated she was steering clear of beef? She had the freedom to share her thoughts right? Absolutely, but not without being sued by Texas Cattlemen.

Eventually she won the case, but the case sent a strong message to those who would dare say something negative about the beef industry because the average person doesn't have the same financial resources as Oprah and would face financial ruin if sued by groups like the Texas Cattlemen.
We do enjoy some amount of freedom with things we say, but don't have the freedom to say anything we please. This is true on social networks as well. To the point where anything posted on social networking sites such as Facebook can and most likely will be used against you in a court of law:

[Facebook has more than 800 million active users—and, on average, they upload 250 million pictures a day to the site. There are no estimates on how many of those pictures people regret uploading, but you can be sure it’s more than a few. The photos taken after a few too many drinks, the pictures that show people engaged in dangerous or even illegal behavior…anyone who’s been on Facebook for a while has seen those images. But it’s not just the pictures that can get you in trouble.

Maybe you’ve testified in court you were in one place at a particular day and time, but your Facebook page shows you checked in elsewhere. Maybe your child custody agreement limits how far you can travel with your kids, but you post a status update telling friends you’re taking them to Disneyland and their father can’t stop you. Maybe you’re asking for a no-fault divorce but there’s evidence on Facebook to suggest you were having an affair before separating from your spouse. There are all sorts of ways in which Facebook can get you in legal trouble, or be used against you in a court case.] source: http://blogs.lawyers.com

The take away from this blog entry, is use the same discretion on social networks that you would use in your personal life. Even more important, think before you post.

Pinball Anyone?

Sometimes it's the simple things in life that bring us pleasure. Simple things like mom's apple pie, a handwritten love letter, and pinball -- that's right, pinball! One of the staples of America pinball games could be found in just about any bar worth its weight in beer. Typically tucked away in a little corner the game was surrounded by players all competing for the title of "Pinball Badass." Check out how this slice of Americana is still being kept alive today:

21st Century Bank Robbers Steal $45 Million In ATM Fraud

When you think of the term bank robber you might immediately envision a person with a mask on, standing in a bank with their gun drawn pointing it at a bank teller who's frantically trying to comply with the robber's commands. Well you can kiss those days goodbye.

No guns needed! Nowadays you can rob a bank without ever stepping foot in a bank. Welcome to the 21st century bank heist brought to you by a group of cyber-criminals who stole approximately $45 Million dollars in a matter of hours.

[Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch called it "a massive 21st-century bank heist" and compared its size to the Lufthansa heist in the late 1970s immortalized in the film "Goodfellas." Lynch said the fraudsters had moved with astounding speed to loot financial institutions around the world.

A security analyst said it was the biggest ATM fraud case she had heard of.

Seven people are under arrest in the U.S. in connection with the case, which prosecutors said involved thousands of thefts from ATMs using bogus magnetic swipe cards. The accused ringleader in the U.S. cell, Alberto Yusi Lajud-Pena, was reportedly murdered in the Dominican Republic late last month, prosecutors said. More investigations are ongoing and other arrests have been made in other countries, but prosecutors did not have details.

An indictment unsealed Thursday accused the eight of being members of the New York cell, saying they withdrew $2.8 million in cash from hacked accounts in less than a day. One of the suspects was caught on multiple surveillance cameras, his backpack increasingly loaded down with cash. Others took photos of themselves with giant wads of bills as they made their way up and down Manhattan.

Lynch said the cells would take a cut of the money then launder it through expensive purchases or ship it wholesale to the global ringleaders, but didn't say where they were located. Prosecutors said the scheme involved attacks on two banks, Rakbank, which is in the United Arab Emirates, and the Bank of Muscat in Oman. Hackers obtained debit card data, eliminated withdrawal limits on the accounts, created access codes and then sent a network of operatives fanning out to rapidly withdraw money in multiple cities, authorities said.]source: huffingtonpost.com

Retailers Are Tracking You Without Your Knowledge

While you're browsing the aisles at your favorite store, there is a good chance that your favorite store is doing a bit of browsing itself. The difference is you're looking for a good deal but they're looking for specific information about you. Things like how often you visit the store, how long you've been in a store, and your shopping habits are all being tracked on your mobile device via Wi-Fi without your knowledge or consent.

The big question privacy advocates are asking is what exactly are companies doing with the information they covertly gather from consumers? Check out the video below:

Introducing The Toshiba Canvio Connect Drive

[The Canvio Connect is very compact, about the same size as the WD My Passport Edge, with a shiny plastic chassis that's red on the top and bottom and black on the sides. The drive is also very light -- just 5.3 ounces -- and feels very sturdy in the hand. On one side, it has a Micro-USB 3.0 port, which works with the included standard USB 3.0 cable. This is the only cable you'll need to use the drive since it's bus-powered, meaning it's powered by the USB port to which it's connected.source
