"Creating" Your Child From Scratch

If you were given the option to pick and chose your child's traits and abilities before it was born, what would you do? Would you remove undesirable traits like shyness? Would you enhance traits like honesty? How far would you go? Would you change eye color, hair type, skin color, etc.? These are only a few questions parents in the near future may be faced with as leaps and strides are made in biotechnology:

Is Google Turning Into The Real Life Skynet?

It seems like it was only yesterday when Google was merely a small company with 8 employees trying to make a name for itself among heavy hitting search engines like Yahoo, MSN, and AOL Search.

Today Google has matured and passed up the competition dramatically. As the company grows it acquires companies and technologies that continue to make it a force to be reckoned with. Ranging from the Android OS to the acquisition of Motorola, most of Google's acquisitions for the most part make sense -- until lately:

[Google added more pieces to its growing toolbox of robotics late last week with the purchase of Boston Dynamics, a military contractor that has raised intrigue by releasing videos of its inventions in recent years. Those inventions include a four-legged robot capable of galloping past Olympian sprinters and a jumping contraption that can leap onto tall buildings. Another video of a creepy-looking four-footed machine has been watched more than 15 million times since it was posted on Google's YouTube site five years ago.

Besides designing animal-like robots, Boston Dynamics also has been working on humanoids as part of a $10.8 million contract with the US government's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA.

Boston Dynamics' links to the US military has inspired comparisons of its work with the ruthless cyborgs that overthrew humans in the "Terminator" movies. Founded in 1992 by former Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Marc Raibert, Boston Dynamics says it is dedicating to "changing your idea of what robots can do."]source: http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/

Some think Google will become the real life Skynet, but I think the clip below gives a better possibility for which way Google would most likely be headed:

Tech Quote of the Day 12/18/13

“Geeks = Know more about computers than their computer teacher, so everyone comes to them for computer problems.
Nerds = Have no life and only worries about school, no one talks to them.
Jocks = Know a lot about sports but not much else.
Geek's Wife: Completely depend on the geek for tech support. Tend to be pretty good looking.
Nerd's Wife: nonexistent
Jock's Wife: only there for money, most likely having an affair with another jock.
See Geeks are the best!” ― Hamza Charlemagne

What A Single Act Of Kindness And A Homeless Man Can Teach Us

If this story doesn't restore your faith in humanity I don't know what will. The story itself is quite simple, man loses job and home becomes homeless, then meets another man who offers him the choice between receiving $100 or 16 free lessons on how to code. The lessons we can all learn from this story are numerous and that's where things become more complex. Check out the lessons learned below the video:

Lesson #1, just because a person is homeless doesn't mean they're lazy or worthless.
You see, Leo Grand the homeless man in this story lost his job selling life insurance and then lost his home due to being "priced out" -- that is he could no longer afford his rent when a new apartment complex built near his place caused his rent to increase.

Lesson #2, there are some people out there who still care.
Looked upon as a modern day good Samaritan local programmer Patrick McConlogue saw Grand and decided to perform a random act of kindness which as a result can potentially change Grand's life for years to come.

Lesson #3, not all homeless people are out to get money
When faced with the choice between $100 or free coding lessons Grand's choice shattered many stereotypes about the homeless; one of which is they only want money for alcohol or drugs. He was thinking in the long term when he chose the coding lessons and wisely so. McConlogue started giving him lessons daily and even gave him a Chromebook and books to learn with.

Lesson #4, homeless people aren't dumb
Within about 3 months or so of training, Leo Grand put his training to use and developed an app that can potentially kill two birds with one stone: provide a solution to the earth's carbon emissions problem and hopefully will put a few bucks in his pocket. Grand's app Trees for Cars is a carpooling app that will help lessen the amount of cars that are on the road thus reducing CO2 emissions.

Lesson #5, a single random act of kindness can change the world
Acts of kindness are like stones thrown in a pond -- in the same way the stone causes an initial splash and then ripples that reach the shore, an act of kindness can cause a splash in someone's life which can then have a ripple effect that will positively impact other people's lives as they'll be inspired to do something nice for someone else.

Modular Phone Much Close To Becoming A Reality

Remember the song kids used to sing in elementary school to learn about the skeletal system? It went like this ...the foot bone's connected to the shin bone, the shin bone's connected to the thigh bone... (you get the picture.)

Pretty soon the world may be singing a new tune to learn about a new system -- the smart phone modular system. Engadget reported that Project Ara, Motorola's modular phone initiative is close to completion. If the the modular phone is well received by consumers this could will change the way consumers buy smartphones and could change the smartphone landscape a bit. Check out the video below:

Fun With Siri And Google Now

How familiar are you with the long list of things you can accomplish using either Siri or Google Now voice command apps? If you're not too familiar you may want to watch the two videos below. Youtuber PhoneBuff did a nice job of going through 50 voice commands on both apps that will give you ideas on ways to use your mobile device that may have never crossed your mind before.

The commands on either platform range from playful commands like "Siri I'm tired" (which will provide you with a suggestion to take a nap) to commands that aid in being more productive like "What's the status of flight...?" You can also finally find the answer to life...seriously. Try asking Google Now, "What's the answer to life, the universe, and everything?" you'll be shocked to know there's actually an answer. If you really want to have some fun, try finding the answer to "How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?"

Whether at home, at work or at play, many of these commands on either platform will provide a benefit to your lifestyle. Have a look:
