Mobile Devices: Clear And Present Danger

An organization is only as strong as its weakest link. From a security standpoint mobile devices are quickly fitting the profile of that weak link. It's strange to note that there are companies that take great care in securing their networks, desktops, and laptops; however, little to no action has been taken towards securing mobile devices.

Tablet PCs, smartphones, PDAs, etc., all make our lives much easier. They are our heaven sent little helpers when we need to be more productive, and need to work more efficiently and effectively.
There is no question that the benefits of using mobile devices in the workplace are numerous, but having them in the corporate infrastructure also present some challenges for infosec professionals.

The challenge isn't necessarily how to secure mobile endpoints, (a slightly modified policy for laptops would work nicely) but compelling users to be mindful of the importance of security as it pertains to how they use their mobile devices is a challenge all unto itself.
Another challenge is how to devise policies for user's mobile devices that aren't corporate issued. How far can a company go to protect their network without infringing on the rights of users who bring their personal mobile devices to work?
Some companies altogether overlook securing mobile devices and as a result have set themselves up for a potential security nightmare. Data breaches, compliance issues, and unauthorized access to the network are a few risks that will become a company's reality if mobile devices are continued to be left out of security loop.

Thanks Microsoft, The Perfect Valentine's Day Gift

Microsoft showed users of Windows (server, desktop, IE and Sharepoint) how much they care by giving them the perfect gift for Valentine's Day; a patch that resolves 21 issues. Now who says Microsoft doesn't care about its users? (Can you sense the sarcasm?)

  • MS12-016- Vulnerabilities in .NET Framework and Microsoft Silverlight Could Allow Remote Code Execution
  • MS12-009- Vulnerabilities in Ancillary Function Driver Could Allow Elevation of Privilege
  • MS12-011- Vulnerabilities in Microsoft SharePoint Could Allow Elevation of Privilege
  • MS12-012- Vulnerability in Color Control Panel Could Allow Remote Code Execution
  • MS12-014- Vulnerability in Indeo Codec Could Allow Remote Code Execution
