Airport Uses Hologram "Staff Members"
Manchester Airport in the UK has revealed two 2-d hologram staff members that will help to speed up lines by reminding travellers of the rules and regulations of flying. The Airport states, "The technology has been developed in conjunction with Musion, and uses a texture that is carefully prepared during manufacture to retain maximum transparency and strength. The resulting surface betters that of a glass mirror, allowing the reproduction of high definition video at such high quality that they look real. So much so that passengers at Manchester Airport have been seen presenting their passports to the holograms!"

Smart Cards Not a Problem For Hackers
Hackers devised a method of accessing networks that require the use of smart cards along with a password. The attack uses a method called 'smart card proxy'. The attacker first gains access to a system typically by sending an email with a malicious attachment that provides access to the network when executed. Once the network has been accessed, systems that use smart cards are located and keyloggers are installed on those systems to steal user passwords. Finally, when the victim uses their smart card and logins into the network from their compromised system, the hacker then attempts to login to the server requiring the smart card for authentication redirecting the servers request for a token to the compromised system where the token is accepted and the stolen password is used by the attacker.

Sony a contender in the "Tablet Wars"

2011 Year of the ...robot?

Many people (including myself) have dubbed 2011 the year of the tablet PCs, but it looks like it may very well be the year of the robot also. We've seen many robot designs in the works, from an automated hair washing robot, to soccer playing robots now we have dancing robots. What's interesting is not really the fact that these robots can 'bust a move', but their range of motion, and smooth movement is what is really impressive. My prediction for 2011 is we'll see more robots and the battle will be on to see who will produce the best one this year. You can check out the dancing robot's here, and watch their video here:

Keyless-entry systems for cars easily hacked

A company from Switzerland found a method that can be used to gain access to a vehicle that uses keyless-entry. They used readily available equipment ranging from $100-$1000 to transmit radio signals from the car owner to the car using 2 Antennas- one within 26 feet of the person holding the key fob and and one within 20 feet of the target vehicle. What happens next is very simple, the key fob generates a low powered signal when the antenna is within range and the antenna transmits the signal to the other antenna allowing a thief to gain access to the vehicle, and if it's a newer car with a start button they can drive off.

Practical application for a thief would be to have multiple parties helping to spot the car, and the owner without being spotted themselves. Something I think could work even better would be to utilize an antenna booster which would greatly increase the distance of the antenna's range to locate key fobs and transmit it to the 2nd antenna near the car. If this would work this means that instead of one thief having to be near the key fob holder and another near the target car, one thief could stand near a target car and use the antenna booster (while standing near the car) to pickup and transmit the correct key fob's radio signal and steal the car. In theory this seems very possible.

Twitter sued by VS Technologies for patent infringement?

VS Technologies has filed suit against Twitter for infringing on it's patent; United States patent no. 6,408,309 ("the 309 Patent"). VS Technologies received the patent back in 2002 and Twitter publicly launched in 2006 so the question is why are we just now hearing about this patent infringement now? According to the document, "As it pertains to this lawsuit, very generally speaking, the ’309 Patent discloses methods and systems for creating interactive, virtual communities of people in various fields of endeavor wherein each community member has an interactive, personal profile containing information about that member."

I can't wait to hear the outcome of this case. For more information about the case click here.

Hackers wreak havoc on Modern Warfare 2

"It's in total shambles and unplayable." That's how one Joystiq reader describes Modern Warfare 2 on PSN. With PS3 system security in disarray, hackers and cheaters have run rampant on Infinity Ward's Call of Duty games. Players unwittingly placed into a hacked server can meet the unfortunate consequence of losing all their stats and, unfortunately, it doesn't appear a fix is in sight."

Out with the old in with the new....Java that is.

From time to time I like to give my computer systems a "checkup" During this checkup I review what processes are running, what programs are starting up via the registry and what software is installed. Fortunately nothing malicious comes up and all my systems are given a clean bill of health. One thing I did notice was that in the add/remove programs menu I had several different versions of Java installed on my system. These versions would range from old to the most current version, and they were all pretty big in size.
I decided to take a chance after some thought and deleted all the old versions of Java only leaving the current version installed on my system. I had no clue if this would cause any problems but after some testing I've found that it didn't have a negative impact on my system. What I didn't know at the time was that having all of those outdated versions was actually more harmful then what I did.
According to article written by Michael Cobb, I found out that having outdated versions of Java can actually create a vulnerability on your system. The article goes on to state that "malicious websites could possibly invoke these outdated versions of the software still present on a user's machine, even if the latest, patched version has been installed and set as the authoritative version to be used by both the user's default Web browser and the operating system." You can view the article here.

Before you trash that old computer.....

You may want to check with your local state laws before you throw electronics in the trash. At least 27 states have placed bans on thrashing e-waste (short for electronic waste), and for a good reason I'll have to admit.
Over time components found in electronics like television sets, motherboards, MP3 players, etc., break down releasing harmful chemicals that can pollute the environment. Last year various electronic recycling locations sprang up in an effort to stop e-waste from entering our landfills. Now it looks like recycling e-waste will be mandatory as more states place the law on the books. According to the Associated Press, "The Environmental Protection Agency estimated in 2007 that the U.S. generates about 2 million tons a year of e-waste, which can contain lead, mercury, cadmium and other potentially harmful chemicals. If those toxins leach from landfills into the environment, risks to human health can include cancer and nervous system damage, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."
Here are 3 simple suggestions you can use when you want to get rid of old electronics:
Donate to charity
Give it so someone else- everyone loves a hand me down...it's free
Recycle- find locations that specialize in recycling e-waste

Stealth Rootkit Capable of Stealing Windows 7 and Server 2008 Passwords

Security expert Csaba Barta developed a rootkit that is capable of carrying out a cached data attack. When an attacker alters data that resides in physical memory, it is known as a cached data attack. An example of a cache data attack is finding the data value for the password hashes of a user account and clearing or resetting the password.
What makes this attack so insidious is that the attack can be performed while a user is logged in without the attack/attacker being detected, not even in running processes listing.
According to Volatility and RegRipper User Manual by Mark Morgan, "...it is possible for an attacker with the ability to modify kernel memory to alter the cached registry data in memory, and thus alter the behavior of the operating system, without the changes being visible in the on-disk storage. For example, an attacker could find the key in memory that holds the password hashes for the Administrator user, and replace them with pre-computed hashes for a known password. The attacker would then be able to log in as Administrator using the password of his choice."
Other features of the rootkit are keyboard logging and stealing user priviledges.
Barta shared his findings at the recent Hackers Halted conferences and fortunately plans on providing Antivirus companies with the rootkit for their databases. Barta will also release the rootkit's binaries to the EC-Council which will include the rootkit in CEHv7 training material.

Hello DDR4 DRAM

As the prices for DDR2 and DDR3 DRAM rapidly drop, the final touches have been put on DDR4 DRAM. Thanks to Samsung which actually completed development for the DDR4 DRAM module last month. The new modules use new circuitry which is the smallest used by Samsung yet. It boasts of improved operating speeds: try 1.6Gbit/sec to 3.2Gbit/sec on for size. According to Samsung, consumers can expect "twice the performance of DDR3 DRAM" and a reduction in power consumption by %40 for notebook users. You can read more about the price drop of DRAM here.
