Hackers devised a method of accessing networks that require the use of smart cards along with a password. The attack uses a method called 'smart card proxy'. Once the network has been accessed, systems that use smart cards are located and keyloggers are installed on those systems to steal user passwords. Finally, when the victim uses their smart card and logins into the network from their compromised system, the hacker then attempts to login to the server requiring the smart card for authentication redirecting the servers request for a token to the compromised system where the token is accepted and the stolen password is used by the attacker.
