Smart Phone Over Wi-Fi
A company called Republic Wireless may potentially change the way you use your smartphone. Instead of solely using a cellular network, Republic Wireless seeks to allow users to do their everyday tasks (text, talk, and surf) on Wi-Fi networks. The concept of using your smartphone on a Wi-Fi network to place calls is not a new concept; the 2.0 version of Magic Jack was supposed to do something similar.
According to the website,
Find out more about this new service here.
@ITSecPr0
According to the website,
"You pay $199 for the first month, plus tax, and get a new LG Optimus smartphone....Membership after that is $19 per month, plus tax. Period. Going Wi-Fi allows us to broom the whole business of contracts, overages and having any calling plan at all. You use your phone all you want. You say “so long” any time you want. republic wireless means freedom. Experience it sometime."

Never Bite The Hand That Feeds You
Mark Zuckerberg may want to consider the title of this blog entry the next time he discusses Microsoft and secretly keeping tabs on users in the same sentence. It's no surprise that Facebook has millions of users but those numbers don't necessarily reflect the attitude of those users towards Facebook. There has been complaints about changes to the UI in the past few months or so, but there is also an outcry from disgruntled users who demand more privacy. Mark Zuckerberg has made it clear many times over that he is in favor of ending anonymity on the internet, which puts Facebook at odds with each other.
He recently was interviewed by PBS's Charlie Rose, and began to teeter on the line of biting the hand that fed them -- Microsoft. Click here to see what Zuckerberg said about Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft data collection practices.

Sorry Charlie....No More iOS Developer Program
Charlie Miller got kicked out of the iOS Developer program for exploiting a vulnerability in Apple's App store where he was able to covertly place a malicious app into the iPad/iPhone app store. For the sake of showing the potential damage that could be done, the app on the surface appeared to be a stock ticker; but it was what was beneath the surface of that app that all the buzz is about. Take a look at the video to see how this little monster works:

Dealing With Armchair IT Experts
At some point in your IT career, you have or you will come across an armchair IT expert. What's that? You may ask. It's the client from hell who can barely turn on the PC, yet they feel it's their duty to teach you about computers. You offer a solution to their problem but they want to tell you what they found on Google or what their friend told them. What do you do with these annoying clients? Do you pimp smack them into tomorrow? Do you loose your cool and tell them to shut up? Or do you just take one for the team and absorb all of their abuse?
TechRepublic actually came up with 10 tips to help you deal with these individuals. Below is an excerpt from the article '10 tips for dealing with armchair IT experts':

TechRepublic actually came up with 10 tips to help you deal with these individuals. Below is an excerpt from the article '10 tips for dealing with armchair IT experts':
"1: Be prepared
The number one bit of advice I can give anyone with regard to speaking or writing about IT is to be prepared. Make sure that your information came from a reliable source and that it is not outdated. Otherwise, someone is sure to call you out on it. Being prepared and knowing your stuff are the most important things you can do to avoid confrontation with those who have a point to prove.
2: Learn from them (if you can)
Although it is often the jerks who will publically challenge you, you can’t automatically assume that the person who is questioning you is an idiot. About a year ago, I sat in on a session that a friend was presenting, and someone stood up and challenged him during his presentation. My friend told the guy that we were all here to learn and that if he had something to add to the material then to go ahead.
The person who was challenging my friend actually made a perfectly valid point. It was a little bit outside the scope of the presentation, but it was good information and it did not directly contradict anything my friend was discussing.
3: Give them enough rope to hang themselves
I once gave a presentation and had someone stand up and tell me that everything about my presentation was wrong. At that point, I had two choices. I could have called for security to have the guy removed, but that would have left everyone in the room wondering about the validity of his comment. My other option was to give him the floor.
I asked the guy to be more specific and to tell me exactly what I was wrong about. The guy thoroughly embarrassed himself and was soon put in his place by other attendees."

Look Inside Buildings With Google Street View
Thanks to Google Maps with Street Views we will be able to look inside businesses with the 'zoom in'and 'zoom out' features. The purpose of this technology is to give people a sense of what the environment of a particular building or business is like. By viewing a business's ambiance (even though a virtual representation) the user can get a feel for that business. Some may think it's just another Google step to becoming a real life Skynet, but let's just pretend for the sake of this blog entry, that Google's intentions were noble. Google would actually be on to something quite beneficial to users, businesses, and of course Google.
Various industries in a sense would get global exposure, and free advertisement. Just imagine a person in Arizona flying to Atlanta, Georgia to attend a business meeting. They'd need plane tickets, hotel reservations, places to eat. We know to go about getting plane tickets and reserving hotel rooms, but what about local restaurants. How would the person know which restaurants to visit and which to stay away from? They could select restaurants based on popularity, and ratings.
The popularity and rating of a restaurant only tells part of the story. Having a view inside the restaurant gives an additional side to the story that hasn't been experienced quite yet. Instead of seeing text of local restaurants, the person would be able to get a better feel for the restaurant based on pictures of the inside of the building thanks to street views. The concept is a great one, and could be a win win situation for users, businesses and Google if Google goes about it the right way.

Meet The Plugbot
picture: theplugbot.com
What exactly is Plugbot? According to theplugbot.com, "it's a covert penetration testing device (bot) designed for covert use during physical penetration tests." In other words a very small computer that can be secretly placed within a company to gain access to the company's network to scan, collect and transmit data remotely.
This is definitely a tool ethical hackers can use for the purpose of penetration testing, but this unit should also make security professionals realize that the threat of an inside attacker or hacker deploying a similar type of very small computer is higly possible and may be the next wave in how attacks are carried out on companies.
