GoDaddy's Bad Move To Inject Code Into YOUR Website

It was business as usual when blogger Igor Kromin noticed he was  having issues with his site's admin interface. He took a look under the hood and did a little digging around.

After going over his site with a fine tooth comb he noticed something out of the ordinary, something he didn't recall seeing before, something that would let him know someone or something had been there.

This is what he found:
<script>'undefined'=== typeof _trfq || (window._trfq = []);'undefined'=== typeof _trfd && (window._trfd=[]),_trfd.push({'tccl.baseHost':'secureserver.net'}),_trfd.push({'ap':'cpsh'},{'server':'xxxxxxxx0000'}) // Monitoring performance to make your website faster. If you want to opt-out, please contact web hosting support.</script><script src='https://img1.wsimg.com/tcc/tcc_l.combined.1.0.6.min.js'></script>
A tiny bit of mysterious Javascript he didn't recognize. If he didn't place the code in his pages who did? Was it some hacker in a dimly lit room seeking to wreak havoc on his site? Nope. The culprit was actually his web hosting service -- GoDaddy. You're probably wondering (like I did) why would a web hosting service covertly inject JavaScript into their client's web pages?

The Ataribox Unveiled... Well A Little

Photo: Atari
So Atari is back in the hardware business, huh? That was the word a few months back when the company released a teaser video of what is known as the Ataribox - a gaming system/PC for TV thingamajig. When news first broke about the former titan of hardware gaming making a come back the 9 year old inside of me jumped for joy, but of course the adult gamer in me had some questions that needed to be answered. Although the company is back to the console arena (in some capacity) exactly what type of system is it? Will it be a throwback system playing solely retro video games like the Nintendo Entertainment System Classic Edition? Or will it be something that directly rivals the established console giants Xbox, Playstation and Nintendo? Or God forbid, it's something remotely like the ill-fated Ouya.

Introducing Samsung's Bixby

Samsung revealed Bixby, the mobile phone assistant whose key point is it's an intelligent tool meant to declutter your phone allowing the user to be much more efficient by using one app to control others. Bridging the gap between voice, touch, vision and AI, Bixby seems to enhance the user phone experience by combining functions from other mobile assistants like Google Assistant and Siri and improving upon them. Bixby's ability to learns your daily habits and places you've been and make suggestions based on that data is both creepy and cool at the same time. In a nutshell, Bixby is like Google Assistant, Siri and Amazon search all in one package with a little IoT functionality sprinkled on top. Check out the video below for more information:

Kudos Protonmail: Secure Email For All!

The once invite-only email service from ProtonMail is now available to everyone. What exactly does that mean? Simply put, "you get secure email!" (in Oprah Winfrey's voice). It basically means that you can send and receive email without being snooped on by the government. They won't be able to intercept your emails and see those messages so critical to national security like what's for dinner tonight? can you pick up the kids from soccer practice?  Or the dare I say -- that meatloaf was great last night.

End of Yahoo Screen May Mean The End Of Yahoo

Yahoo the once mighty titan of the internet little by little seems to be fading away into obscurity despite attempts by leadership to turn things around. A recent move that may have signaled the beginning of the end for the struggling company was the recent killing off of the Yahoo Screen service, the company's on demand streaming service where shows like Community and Open Space (which was quite entertaining) could be viewed. The service was packed with other shows, TV clips and original content like Chow Ciao a cooking show hosted by Fabio Viviani. Needless to say the Screen service had a lot of potential.

Lack of attracting advertisers for its shows and lack of viewership were cited as major reasons for pulling the proverbial plug on the service.  The lack of viewership may have been attributed to entering into the streaming video arena late, seeing how Yahoo Screen was launched in 2013 making it the baby of the bunch in regards to other streaming services such as Youtube (2005), Hulu (2007), Crackle (2007)  and Amazon Video (2006).

Considering the success of the other online streaming companies it should have been obvious to the big wigs over at Yahoo that online streaming is the wave of the future that they desperately needed to ride even if the wave seemed to take them under, it was temporary at best.  Building a solid foundation in the streaming arena could have definitely been the company's saving grace, but by giving up what may have been its best opportunity to stay in the game, I doubt the company will be able to bounce back.

Tech News: Amazon Open's New Brick & Mortar Today

Today at 9:30 am (PT) Amazon will open the doors to its first brick and mortar store located in Seattle. Some think it's strange for the company to have a physical bookstore seeing how they put other bookstores out of business simply operating online. What's interesting is that there are some people who have no clue that Amazon originally started as an online bookstore. So some may say its oddly returning to its roots with this move:

[The store, located in University Village, seems mostly to be a vanity project for Amazon in its hometown. There’s going to be about 5,000 books in a 5,500 square foot retail space: far less than a traditional bookstore, because Amazon will be displaying books facing cover-out rather than spine-out, in an effort to showcase the authors. Combine that with the pricing—the same as Amazon’s website—and it’s hard to see Amazon making actual money from the project.

That said, the company will have the upper hand in selecting titles, since it’s planning to use data from its millions of customers to stock shelves with the most popular books. There will also be a space to try Amazon’s Kindle e-readers and Fire tablets, although I assume no-one will be trying to sell you a Fire phone. Most notably, there’s no pick-up option for online orders, which has been a staple of Amazon’s previous physical locations.]source
